Superman Returns

Director: Bryan Singer

PLF created the CG footage that was composited into mission control and aircraft
monitors during the "Shuttle Disaster" sequence. We used a mixture of full cg renders
composited over digital matte paintings to mimic a high quality NASA produced flight
simulation video. The footage required detailed modeling, animation, matte paintings,
and particle creation for smoke and sparks. The finished footage was then integrated
into live action plates of the mission control room and 777 aircraft.

PLF also completed a variety of finish shots for this project. The primary focus of our work
was screen replacement shots. We replaced greenscreen footage with elements such as the
flight demo animation, news reports, live news footage, and baseball game footage. This
work is seen in several sequences throughout the movie. In addition to the screen
replacements, we also created news graphics and the background for two of the shots.

We also completed a variety of “fix-it” shots where we corrected live action elements for
continuity and quality in the areas of the eye, scar, acne and sweat removal (Superman/
Clark Kent) as well as wig line removal (Lois Lane). For the eye-fix shots, we color
corrected contact lenses by removing the actors brown eye color as well as adjusted the
contact lens’ shade of blue, corrected the spoke pattern in the contacts themselves,
reduced redness in the whites of his eyes, cleaned up the lens edge and adjusted the pupil
size. Other fixes include the addition or removal of CG logos in live action and CG
elements, and the removal of greenscreen spill from characters and props.
